Here’s Samsung’s Advice for Apple and Its Upcoming Folding iPhone

Samsung's Head of Advanced Mechanical R&D Hee-Cheul Moon shared his insights with WIRED regarding the upcoming Apple folding iPhone. Moon stated that the primary focus for Samsung is reducing the weight of their folding devices, as it significantly impacts user adoption. Over the past seven years, Samsung has managed to decrease the weight of their Galaxy Z Fold8 by 75 grams.

The latest Fold8 Ultra, with its passport-style shape, weighs 201 grams, while top-end candybar smartphones like the Galaxy S26 Ultra weigh 214 grams. This weight reduction is achieved by analyzing and optimizing every component, including the printed circuit board, antennas, and fastening parts. Samsung has also downsized the camera system on the Fold8 by removing the telephoto lens and replacing it with a dual-camera system consisting of a main camera and an ultrawide.

This camera reduction is an intentional concession to achieve a lighter, more portable design. While Samsung's Fold8 series still has an IP48 rating for dust and water resistance, which is lower than traditional flagships like the iPhone, Samsung maintains that their devices offer the best-in-class dustproof and waterproof performance in the industry.
