Germany’s Goethe-Institut says Russian-language website, online library to remain available after the Kremlin shuts branches nationwide

The Goethe-Institut has declared that its Russian-language website and online library will continue to be accessible despite the closure of its physical branches in Russia. The decision to keep these digital platforms operational comes after Russian authorities announced that the Goethe-Institut's centers in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Novosibirsk would cease operations starting September 14.

In response to Germany's closure of the Russian House in Berlin, Russian authorities ordered Goethe-Institut employees in the country to leave by September 13. Gitte Zschoch, the institute's secretary-general, lamented the closure, stating that it would limit access to the German language, culture, and factual information for those residing in Russia.

The organization has been collaborating with Germany’s Foreign Office to explore alternative means of fostering exchange and cooperation, particularly through online resources. The fate of existing courses and exam slots scheduled in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Novosibirsk remains uncertain. Meanwhile, Germany has been contemplating stricter entry controls for Russian nationals and advocating for additional EU sanctions against Russia, following the attempted attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport.

This incident, attributed to Russian involvement, prompted the closure of Germany's consulate general in Bonn and heightened tensions between the two nations.
