FBI working with private sector and US allies to respond to Iranian cyber attacks

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is collaborating with private companies and global partners to address cyber attacks orchestrated by Iran-linked cybercriminals targeting the United States' digital infrastructure, according to Jason Bilnoski, deputy assistant director of the FBI's cyber operations branch. Bilnoski made these remarks at the Billington Cyber Security Summit in Washington.

Bilnoski emphasized that the agency no longer operates in isolation, noting that intelligence and leads on hackers are frequently shared among the FBI, international allies, and the U.S. private sector. This shift from unilateral sharing to collaborative efforts has become more common in recent years.

Moreover, Bilnoski highlighted the growing concern over the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by malicious cyber actors to enhance the efficiency and impact of their attacks worldwide. He predicted that AI-driven threats will continue to rise in the coming years.

Under President Donald Trump's administration, the U.S. policy has shifted from merely preventing cyber attacks to deterring adversaries through fear. Bilnoski explained that the administration is pursuing this strategy by partnering with allies and the private sector to counter cyber threats.

David Liebenberg, leader of state-sponsored research threats at Cisco Talos, a Cisco subsidiary, pointed out that AI has lowered the entry barrier for cybercriminals, making sophisticated attacks more accessible. He acknowledged that even less sophisticated attacks can cause significant problems, even if they are swiftly contained.

While Iranian cyber threats have gained prominence in the U.S. cybersecurity landscape due to the ongoing conflict between the two countries, Russia is also a significant player in the cyber realm. Ukraine's deputy director of cyber security, Ivan Kalabashkin, noted that Trump's focus on combating cybercriminals resonates with Ukraine, which faces thousands of cyber attacks during its ongoing war with Russia.

He emphasized that the U.S. administration's cyber strategy, which aims to detect, confront, and defeat adversaries, has been a significant factor in Ukraine's efforts to address cyber threats effectively.
