El Supremo paraliza el derecho al voto de los beneficiarios de la ley de nietos hasta que acrediten que son hijos o nietos de exiliados

Spain's public prosecutor's office and the State Bar Association opposed to the Supreme Court on Monday the suspension of the electoral registration of those benefiting from the Law of Democratic Memory, also known as the "grandchildren" law, which grants citizenship to descendants of exile and emigration. This suspension of registration was requested as a precautionary measure by Vox and the Iustitia Europa party, in their appeal to the highest court against a July agreement by the Central Electoral Board (JEC), which declared itself incompetent to rule on the effects of the "grandchildren" law on the electoral roll.

Both the prosecution and the State Bar argue that what the far-right parties actually want by challenging that agreement is to undermine the law, and they have asked the Supreme Court to reject their petitions because, among other effects, suspending the registration of these new Spanish citizens would deprive them of the fundamental right to vote, as enshrined in the Constitution.
