Cross River Govt orders mechanics, spare parts dealers off Calabar roads

The Cross River State government has mandated street mechanics and spare parts dealers to relocate from major roads in Calabar, labeling their activities as a public nuisance. During a meeting with leaders, the Commissioner for Environment, Mensah Bassey, issued the directive, warning non-compliance would result in forcible removal.

Bassey cited that mechanics operating without designated workshops on Bedwell, King Duke, White House, and Victor Akan streets in Calabar South Local Government Area had damaged the city, blocked traffic, and contributed to infrastructure decline. He clarified the directive targeted unsanctioned mechanic activities, not legitimate auto spare parts businesses.

Mechanics were instructed to relocate to designated workshops allowing regulated operations without traffic obstruction or environmental degradation. The government also urged spare parts dealers to focus on their legitimate trade, preserving clean and orderly surroundings. Bassey emphasized the move aimed at restoring environmental sanity and enhancing traffic flow.

The Auto Parts Dealers Association responded, acknowledging the government's concerns and pledging cooperation in maintaining clean business areas and discouraging activities that obstruct public roads or harm the environment.
