China's Huawei Technologies faces racketeering trial in New York

New York - Chinese technology giant Huawei Technologies is set to face a criminal racketeering trial in the United States, accused of various illegal activities. Jury selection for the trial is set to commence on Tuesday.

The indictment claims that Huawei, along with some of its subsidiaries, engaged in numerous criminal acts. These include stealing trade secrets, plotting to steal U.S. trade secrets, committing wire and bank fraud, as well as other alleged offenses.

In addition to these charges, the indictment alleges that Huawei did business in North Korea, which is subject to U.S. sanctions, and installed surveillance equipment that was used by Iran to monitor Iranian protesters during the 2009 anti-government demonstrations.

Huawei's legal team has attempted to have the broad criminal case dismissed. They argue that the U.S. allegations are too vague, that some are considered "impermissibly extraterritorial," and that they do not involve domestic wire and bank fraud.

Huawei is the world's leading supplier of equipment for wireless telecom networks. However, due to concerns over security risks, the company is currently banned from selling its equipment to U.S. carriers. Furthermore, Huawei has been blacklisted by other Western allies, such as Canada and Britain.

The company primarily manufactures phones and other communication devices.
