China's Huawei Technologies faces racketeering trial in New York

New York — Huawei Technologies, a prominent Chinese technology firm, is set to face a criminal racketeering trial in the United States for allegedly engaging in various illicit activities, including the theft of technology, plotting to steal U.S. trade secrets, and committing wire and bank fraud. Jury selection is slated to commence on Tuesday.

According to the indictment, Huawei, along with some of its subsidiaries, allegedly operated in North Korea despite U.S. sanctions in place. Furthermore, the company is accused of installing surveillance equipment that aided Iran in spying on protesters during the 2009 anti-government demonstrations in Iran. Huawei's legal team has attempted to have the extensive criminal case thrown out, contending that the U.S. allegations are overly broad, extraterritorial, and do not involve domestic wire and bank fraud.

Huawei is recognized as the world's largest supplier of equipment for wireless telecommunications networks; however, the company is prohibited from selling its products to U.S. carriers due to concerns over potential security risks. Additionally, Huawei has been placed on a blacklist by several Western allies such as Canada and the United Kingdom.

The company manufactures a range of products, including mobile phones and other electronic devices.
