Canada's retaliatory tariffs take effect as US trade talks stall

Ottawa, Canada - On Tuesday, Canada implemented retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, escalating an 18-month trade dispute and prompting Prime Minister Mark Carney to advocate for a move away from their largest trading partner. The Canadian levies come in response to the U.S. imposing 50 percent tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian products last month, following several rounds of talks that ultimately failed.

This escalation has widened the divide between the two longtime allies, with both nations blaming each other for the breakdown in negotiations. Speaking on Tuesday, Carney said in a video posted on YouTube, "We have everything we need to pivot and prosper. That pivot will come at a cost. There's always a cost to action. But it doesn't come close to the cost of standing still."

As per government sources, there are currently no ongoing talks between the two sides at the ministerial or government official level. Ottawa has designed these retaliatory measures to exert both economic and political pressure on Washington. The tariffs are anticipated to impact various sectors significantly.
