Authorities urged to review minimum age for kids on mountain expeditions

Authorities in Perak have recommended reviewing the standard operating procedure regarding the minimum age for children participating in extreme activities and hiking expeditions in mountainous areas, following a recent incident. On August 29, six climbers, including a father and daughter team, were reported missing during the Trans Gerah Expedition in Gunung Gerah, Kelantan.

All six were found safe the following day and released from Pos Kemar. Perak Fire and Rescue Department director Sayani Saidon expressed the need for a reevaluation of the SOP, citing the increased risk of physical injury for children undertaking challenging tracks. She argued that a transparent and careful review of the matter could help limit the involvement of underage climbers, prioritizing safety.
