Australia braces for its own fire season after sweltering European summer

Australian firefighters are on high alert as the southern hemisphere's summer approaches, following a devastating fire season in Europe. Trent Curtin, head of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service, expressed concern over the heightened fire risk this year compared to previous years. The El Nino weather event, which typically brings hotter and drier conditions, has intensified the risk of wildfires in Australia.

Large portions of Europe, the world's most rapidly warming continent, experienced scorching summers, leading to dry vegetation and exacerbating severe wildfires. Britain recorded its hottest summer since records began, while Italy witnessed its warmest temperatures in 75 years. Curtin noted, "We're seeing some extraordinary conditions in the northern hemisphere at the moment. They're experiencing fires that they haven't seen for a couple of decades or maybe never seen before."

Australia has a history of combating wildfires, including the catastrophic 2019-2020 Black Summer blazes that ravaged an area equivalent to Turkey and claimed 33 lives. Hazard reduction burns, where controlled fires are set in forested areas to mitigate the spread of wildfires, are a common practice in Australia. Alex Capararo, a sector commander for the Forestry Corporation of New South Wales, led a hazard reduction burn about three hours north of Sydney and stated, "For this year, we're alert but not alarmed.

We're aware that the seasonal outlook predicts a busier-than-usual fire season – conditions will be quite dry and hot."

The peak fire danger season in northern New South Wales typically commences in mid-October, while in the southern parts of the state, it begins in December, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
