Anwar reminds youth of Tun Razak's vision for NEP

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim recently reminded the youth of Malaysia that the New Economic Policy (NEP) was the vision of Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, who remained unwavering in his efforts to eradicate poverty regardless of race. Anwar recounted Razak's speeches and discussions, emphasizing his statement that "poverty does not know skin colour," even though the majority of those affected were Malays.

The Prime Minister made these remarks at an event held at the Tun Abdul Razak Memorial in Kuala Lumpur to commemorate the statesman.

Anwar stressed that it is the responsibility of leaders to clarify the historical vision of the NEP for the public. He noted that while the NEP needs to be refined and strengthened to remain relevant to contemporary demands, it is still a noble concept for restructuring society and eradicating poverty based on merit, regardless of race.

Razak faced numerous challenges during his tenure, including the threats posed by Communism, which led to significant public funds being diverted towards defence rather than rural development projects. Communialism also posed a hurdle for the multicultural nation, and Rasak had cautioned student leaders against allowing national pride to degenerate into racial chauvinism.

Anwar highlighted that Razak, a champion of Malay rights and the national language, continually urged young leaders to maintain principled behavior and guard against distorted interpretations of Malay nationalism. The Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, former Deputy Prime Minister Tun Musa Hitam, and Yayasan Tun Razak chairman Nazir Razak were also present at the event.
