Anwar: Asean haze mechanism needs stronger action, Malaysia won’t shield firms

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 8 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed the need for enhanced actions within the existing Asean mechanism to combat transboundary haze. He emphasized the issue's significant impact on public health, particularly on vulnerable groups like children and infants. Speaking to reporters, Anwar indicated that there was potential for improvement within the Asean framework, urging ministers to scrutinize its efficacy, given the recurring consequences on neighboring nations.

The prime minister's comments came following queries about the adequacy of the current Asean mechanism and the necessity for more stringent enforcement. He noted that the consistent impact of haze on surrounding countries highlighted the necessity to evaluate the effectiveness of the presently in place regional measures. Anwar pointed out that accusations against alleged offenders were merely allegations, as the majority of detected fires were categorized as forest fires.

Furthermore, he clarified that Malaysia would permit Indonesian authorities to take action against Malaysian firms if found culpable. However, Anwar firmly stated that Malaysia would not defend such firms. These remarks occurred as the region persists in dealing with the recurring problem of transboundary haze, which detrimentally affects air quality and public health across international boundaries.
