Anwar: Asean haze mechanism needs stronger action, Malaysia won’t shield firms

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 8 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that there is potential to enhance the existing ASEAN mechanism for addressing transboundary haze. He emphasized the importance of addressing this issue due to its impact on public health. "There is room for improvement," he told reporters at the Plantation and Commodities Ministry monthly assembly.

When questioned about the sufficiency of the current ASEAN mechanism on transboundary haze and the need for stronger enforcement, Anwar stated that the recurring effects of haze on neighboring countries underscored the necessity to evaluate if existing regional mechanisms were sufficiently effective. "The ASEAN ministers have to seriously look at this," he said.

Regarding action taken against alleged perpetrators, Anwar acknowledged that the fires detected were primarily forest fires. "Most of the fires that we detected were forest fires," he said. Anwar also noted that Malaysia would permit Indonesian authorities to take action against Malaysian firms found to be involved. "If there are Malaysian companies involved, we give room for Indonesia to take action.

We certainly will not defend them," he said. Anwar's comments come as the region continues to face the persistent issue of transboundary haze, which can adversely affect air quality and public health across national borders.
