Anthropic Walks Away From Reported $6B Decart AI Deal

Anthropic has reportedly terminated discussions to acquire AI startup Decart AI for roughly $6 billion following a thorough review of the company, according to Bloomberg. The acquisition would have been Anthropic's largest to date and could have enabled the AI firm to decrease expenses related to training and executing AI models by utilizing Decart's chip optimization technology.

While the $6 billion acquisition is no longer moving forward, sources close to the situation have indicated to Bloomberg that Anthropic and Decart may still investigate alternative avenues for collaboration. Decart specializes in developing world models and real-time video tools, with its Lucy Virtual Try-On product enabling live video stream alterations to demonstrate selected apparel, and world models applicable to autonomous driving and robotics scenarios.

It is unclear whether Anthropic was primarily interested in Decart's chip optimization technology or if it also aimed to acquire the world-model business. In recent months, Anthropic has been intensively investing in expanding its computing infrastructure to accommodate the rising demand for its AI models. The company allocated around $517 billion to compute agreements over the past 11 months, including a $1.25 billion monthly payment to SpaceX for capacity from its Colossus data centers.

Anthropic's largest completed acquisition so far was the $300 million it reportedly paid for SDK and developer-tooling company Stainless. The recent surge in mergers and acquisitions within the AI industry as major technology companies acquire smaller startups continues to unfold. For instance, Nvidia recently acquired Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, potentially gaining control of one of the largest repositories of open-source AI models if the deal completes.

SpaceX also acquired Cursor, an AI coding tool, for $60 billion, providing SpaceX's AI lab, xAI, with essential expertise and clientele in the enterprise AI domain. The aborted Decart deal highlights that AI companies are increasingly focusing on controlling the infrastructure, software, and developer tools surrounding their models.

For Claude customers, enhanced training and inference technology could potentially enhance capacity, reliability, and costs, although Anthropic has not announced any immediate product or pricing modifications. The subsequent inquiry is whether Anthropic pursues another acquisition or gains access to Decart's technology through a partnership.
