AMA to commission new multi-purpose abattoir in Accra

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) plans to officially open a new multi-purpose abattoir in the near future. This facility aims to enhance meat safety and hygienic slaughtering in the city. The abattoir will serve as a central hub for animals, where they undergo inspection, slaughtering, processing, and storage under improved sanitary and veterinary standards before reaching consumers.

Equipped with an offloading bay, veterinary section, changing rooms, storage, washrooms, freezing bays, slaughtering and processing areas, an animal drinking pond, and a cattle lairage, the new abattoir provides comprehensive stages for animal handling, slaughtering, meat preparation, and storage. This design aims to ensure compliance with food safety and environmental health regulations through separate areas for each process.

The project is part of efforts to secure meat consumed by Accra residents in hygienic conditions, minimizing health risks from unsanitary practices and poor meat handling. Beyond its public health benefits, the abattoir is anticipated to boost economic activity in Jamestown and surrounding areas. Livelihoods of butchers, livestock traders, and other businesses tied to the meat trade are expected to benefit from the improved facility and potential economic opportunities it could generate.

The commissioning of this abattoir marks a step forward by the AMA towards improving sanitary conditions in the metropolis, creating a more organized environment for meat processing and distribution.
