Abia: Security personnel who assaulted students in Okigwe not our officers – Police

The Abia State Police Command has clarified that the armed security men seen assaulting a lady and her brother in Okigwe, as seen in a viral video, were not police officers but community vigilante operatives. DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, made this statement in response to public outrage in Abia and Imo States over the incident.

Chinaka explained that Okigwe is not under the jurisdiction of the Abia State Police Command. The armed men who committed the assault are vigilante operatives, she noted, and they have already been apprehended. Preliminary findings and information from the Divisional Police Officer in the area confirm this, she said. The DPO has visited the scene, and the investigation is ongoing, awaiting an official statement from the Imo State Command.

The Abia State Police Command emphasized that its officers, under the command of CP Wilfred Afolabi, are disciplined and that any officer found wanting in conduct or discipline will face appropriate disciplinary action. They urged content creators and the public to verify information before sharing it to prevent the spread of false or misleading claims.
