You can now play PS3 games straight from the disc, without owning a PS3

The RPCS3 team has achieved another significant milestone for its PlayStation 3 emulator, bringing it closer to its goal of preserving the entire PS3 library for future preservation. The latest update allows PS3 games to run directly from their original Blu-ray discs, offering a plug-and-play solution for retro gaming enthusiasts.

This development was made possible by digant73 and Megamouse, who contributed crucial code changes that extend support to Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS, in addition to Windows. The team emphasizes that this feature requires a valid decryption key for the specific disc release and a compatible Blu-ray drive capable of reading PS3 discs' file structures.

While direct disc play is a universal option across all supported operating systems, users must provide the necessary hardware requirements. RPCS3's developers stress that this advancement aligns with their mission to preserve the PS3 library, even as Sony prepares to shift towards a digital-only approach in 2028. The emulator has already achieved playable state compatibility for 75% of the PS3 library, highlighting the significance of this achievement.
