WARMINGTON: Donald Trump says U.S. will ground sale of Canadian Bombardier products

US President Donald Trump declared on Monday that Canada's aircraft manufacturer Bombardier would no longer be permitted to sell its products in the United States unless the company began building them within the country. Speaking via a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed frustration, stating that the company's products were "not good enough" and urged Bombardier to "build here" instead of treating America as a "piggybank."

The announcement came as part of an escalating trade dispute between Washington and Ottawa, reflecting Trump's ongoing efforts to compel foreign and domestic entities to manufacture more goods in the US. This objective has been a cornerstone of many economic policies during his second term, including a comprehensive tariff wall that has generated complaints from numerous US trading partners.

The White House issued no immediate response to inquiries regarding the enforcement of this action or the measures Trump would undertake. Bombardier already possesses a defense division with a US-based factory in Kansas, where it assembles planes for special mission purposes. Currently, approximately half of the 5,100 aircraft operated by Bombardier's customers are situated in the United States.

In January, Trump had declared that the US was decertifying Bombardier's Global Express business jets and threatened 50% import tariffs on all aircraft produced in Canada until the country's regulator approved a number of planes manufactured by US rival Gulfstream. These threats were never realized, but in February, Canada granted certification to several Gulfstream planes.

In September, Bombardier announced its intention to acquire a Canadian factory from supplier Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which produces wings for the private jet maker's Global 5500 and 6500 aircraft. Earlier in July, Bombardier reported a 6% growth in quarterly revenue, reaching US$2.15 billion, driven by robust demand for aftermarket services.
