UK Natural Gas Climbs as US-Iran Conflict Escalates

UK natural gas prices surged to their highest level in over three and a half years, reaching above 183 pence per therm, on Monday. The increase in prices comes amidst heightened US-Iran tensions, which could potentially disrupt energy supplies originating from the Persian Gulf. Iran has accused several US-linked vessels of targeting its oil tankers and announced plans to establish a restricted maritime zone beyond the Strait of Hormuz in the near future.

These actions followed US military strikes on Iranian oil tankers, which Washington claimed were carried out in retaliation for Tehran's missile attacks on US Navy warships. The ongoing tit-for-tat escalation is raising concerns among analysts that Qatari LNG shipments to Europe may face further delays. Europe is nearing the end of its summer storage injection period, with gas storage facilities currently standing at 62% capacity, which is lower than the five-year seasonal average.

This reduced storage level raises the risk of increased competition for gas supplies, potentially leading to tighter competition and price spikes during the colder months ahead.
