Toronto accessibility influencer on her role in TIFF opener ‘Being Heumann’

Toronto-based disability rights activist Taylor Lindsay-Noel, known online as Access by Tay, is set to have a small role in the upcoming film "Being Heumann." The film, a biopic about American disability rights activist Judith Heumann, will open the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 7, 2026. Lindsay-Noel, who began posting reviews about accessibility at Toronto restaurants and businesses after the COVID-19 pandemic, hopes her role in the film will amplify the message behind her work that accessibility remains a daily challenge for many people with disabilities.

Born and raised in Toronto, Lindsay-Noel was paralyzed from the chest down at the age of 14 after breaking her neck while attempting a gymnastics skill. She now shares her experiences and advocacy through her social media content, calling on restaurants and businesses to provide accurate accessibility information. The majority of the restaurants she reviewed have contacted her and shared their plans to improve.

The film, directed and written by Academy Award winner Siân Heder, centers on the historic 1977 protest at the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, led by Judith Heumann and other disability rights activists. Lindsay-Noel plays one of the protesters remaining during the sit-in, describing it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. She praised Heder for making everyone feel special on set, regardless of the size of their role.

Lindsay-Noel has also spoken publicly about ableism, which she believes is a rampant issue that disabled people face. She advocates for honesty and understanding in conversations about disability rights. Lindsay-Noel plans to attend the premiere of "Being Heumann" and expressed her excitement about being part of this important film.
