The Curriculum Needs A Sustainable School Culture

Constructing a curriculum without fostering a sustainable school culture is akin to a bird with clipped wings attempting to take flight. Even if Ghana has undergone various educational reforms, including modifications to the curriculum and assessment systems, a well-intentioned curriculum alone may not yield the desired results without an accompanying supportive school culture.

During a recent speech at Apam Senior High School, the Minister of Education emphasized the upcoming adoption of the revised Kindergarten to Primary Six curriculum, developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA). This revised curriculum aims to equip Ghanaian children with essential skills for the modern world, such as critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, and preparation for emerging fields like AI, Robotics, STEM, and electronic learning.

While the government's commitment to providing necessary infrastructure and resources is commendable, the importance of school culture cannot be overstated. The article argues that for the curriculum to be truly effective, schools must cultivate an environment that supports its objectives. This includes promoting trust among all stakeholders, instilling discipline through clear rules and responsible leadership, and encouraging positive behaviour and interactions.

Without a strong, harmonious school culture, even the most well-designed curriculum risks failing to produce the desired outcomes, such as disciplined citizens, creative thinkers, responsible individuals, and ethical leaders.
