Syrian minister asks for more 'trust' in UK parliament hearing

Minister Hind Kabawat of Social Affairs and Labour urged the British government to increase trust in Syria's new authorities during a questioning by UK MPs. The UK had been a key supporter of the Syrian opposition during the 14-year civil war but faces scrutiny over its approach towards the new leadership since the government took power in late 2024.

Kabawat emphasized the need for direct engagement and support in building sustainable institutions, moving away from the traditional humanitarian packages. She expressed gratitude for the support received and called for a collaborative effort in creating a lasting social protection system for Syria. The UK, being the first nation to lift sanctions upon the regime's collapse, played a pivotal role in facilitating international involvement.

Despite this, the UK has been cautious in its engagement, lacking an appointed ambassador and an operational embassy in Damascus due to funding constraints. Syria continues to struggle with foreign investment due to international banking hesitance, even after sanctions were lifted. UK officials attribute the lack of an embassy to insufficient resources.

The absence of British presence has been felt, with other nations filling the void and regional organizations, like the Muslim Brotherhood, stepping in, potentially at odds with UK interests.
