Secret Assad-era Syrian nuclear reactor was almost complete, says UN

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief, Rafael Grossi, revealed that a nearly finished nuclear reactor constructed secretly during Bashar al-Assad's rule would have been capable of generating material for nuclear weapons. Inspectors from the IAEA recently examined two sites, one in Deir Ezzor and another undisclosed location disclosed by Syrian authorities.

In a report obtained by AFP, the IAEA disclosed that Assad's government was constructing the nuclear reactor. Grossi stated that it was evident the previous government was engaging in clandestine activities, emphasizing that they did not wish the world to be aware of their actions. The reactor, which is currently being excavated, is nearly complete and had the potential to produce fissile material for nuclear weapons.

The IAEA also discovered a fuel fabrication plant, a location for storing nuclear fuel and waste, and approximately 73 tonnes of natural uranium metal. Grossi commended Syria's decision to disclose the undisclosed site, which North Korea is believed to have assisted with. The IAEA board will decide whether to close the file opened in 2011, though Grossi has not been tasked with further investigating potential North Korean connections.

A draft resolution suggests closing the file, and the IAEA will continue to collaborate with Syria to safeguard the material and share its findings.
