Punjab Seeks Major Change in O/A Level Equivalence for Medical Admissions

The Department of Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education in Punjab has requested the Inter-Board Coordination Commission (IBCC) to reassess the equivalence criteria for Cambridge qualifications in the context of medical college admissions. Concerns have been raised that the current system may disadvantage O and A Level students compared to those from the traditional Matriculation and FSc system.

Under the existing admission criteria, medical college merit is determined by combining marks from Matriculation/FSc or equivalent qualifications with MDCAT scores. However, disparities in grading and equivalence among these systems can create a significant gap between Cambridge students who achieve top grades and FSc students who earn high marks.

Consequently, even Cambridge students attaining the highest possible grades in O and A Levels may face a comparative disadvantage in the fiercely competitive medical college admission process. This has prompted the Punjab government to seek a review of the existing equivalence criteria, aiming to address the concerns surrounding the treatment of Cambridge qualifications in medical admissions.
