Pietersen back in England colours as mentor in build-up to 2027 World Cup

Kevin Pietersen, the former England cricketer, is set to make a return to the national team in a mentorship role ahead of the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. The England Cricket Board announced on Monday that Pietersen will join Brendon McCullum's coaching staff, working alongside Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel, and Sarah Taylor.

Pietersen, 46, will be involved in England’s white-ball tours to Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, and New Zealand. Speaking about his appointment, Pietersen expressed immense pride in being asked to help the team achieve victory in the World Cup. He emphasized the talent within the squad and the excitement of working tirelessly to maximize their potential.

As an explosive middle-order batter, Pietersen scored nearly 14,000 runs for England across all formats, with his last appearance for the team coming in the controversial 2014 Ashes whitewash. Despite remaining keen on playing for England, he was subsequently excluded from the team's plans. Pietersen's South African background will be particularly valuable as England gear up for the World Cup, which is jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October 2027.

McCullum, Pietersen's mentor, highlighted the unique understanding of performing at the highest level that Pietersen brings to the table, expressing excitement to work together.
