Kevin Pietersen makes shock England return as specialist white-ball mentor

England has welcomed back former Ashes-winning star Kevin Pietersen to its white-ball coaching team, aiming to bolster their preparations for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. The 46-year-old, known as KP, will serve as a specialist mentor, kickstarting his role with the upcoming T20 and one-day matches against Sri Lanka. Brendon McCullum, England's white-ball head coach, expressed immense respect for Pietersen, praising his significant impact on English cricket. Pietersen, one of England's most successful white-ball batters, holds the highest average among all batters to score over 1,000 runs for the country in both ODI and T20 cricket. He was also instrumental in advocating for players to participate in the Indian Premier League and other franchise leagues worldwide, often clashing with his employers.

Since retiring, Pietersen has transitioned to a successful career as a commentator and content creator while mentoring the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. He expressed immense pride in being asked to join the England team once again, following his departure from the sport 12 years ago. England's white-ball head coach, McCullum, acknowledged Pietersen's value to the team, hinting at his desire to coach the Test side as well.

Pietersen's role will begin with a three-match T20 series against Sri Lanka, starting on September 15 in Southampton. His appointment marks a significant turnaround for the cricketer who faced considerable animosity and acrimony during his playing career with England.
