‘One small step toward peace’: Kremlin on outcome of U.S. envoys Kushner and Witkoff’s trip to Moscow

Kremlin officials have greeted the recent visit of U.S. presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow with optimism, viewing it as a modest advance in the quest for peace. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that any diplomatic efforts, however incremental, are highly valued by Moscow. However, Peskov noted that the Kremlin currently lacks information on the outcome of the meeting between Witkoff, Kushner, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Peskov also suggested that Moscow remains open to the resumption of trilateral talks involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia, though he stressed that it is premature to discuss specifics such as location and timing. Witkoff and Kushner traveled to Moscow on September 5 and subsequently met with President Vladimir Putin.

The following day, they held a meeting with Zelensky in Kyiv, their first visit to the Ukrainian capital since the onset of the full-scale war. After the Kyiv meeting, Zelensky acknowledged that the conflict would likely persist until winter.
