NDPC to track implementation of government’s new economy programme

The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) has been tasked with monitoring and evaluating the execution of the government's new economy programme, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced. During a meeting on September 7, 2026, with NDPC leaders, the minister highlighted the commission's crucial role in the program's success.

Forson emphasized that the NDPC's involvement would be essential for tracking the program's progress and assessing its status as it is implemented. The commission's task comes in the lead-up to the unveiling of the New Economy program's full details in the 2027 budget, set to be released in November.

In his presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review, Forson shared the government's aspiration to shift focus from stabilizing the economy to boosting production, job creation, and wealth generation. The New Economy agenda aims to build an economy that not only withstands shocks but also creates jobs, generates wealth, and expands on Ghana's productive strengths, according to the minister.

Forson stressed that economic stabilization is a required first step, not the ultimate goal of the government's economic strategy. He added that the true transformative work lies ahead, aiming to change lives at scale. President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the program will entail a $10 billion investment in key sectors. The 2027 budget will disclose the comprehensive details of the New Economy program.
