The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has attributed progress in local production of medicines and medical devices to its '5 Plus 5' policy and Ceiling List initiatives. These policies have led to an increase in the number of pharmaceutical manufacturing companies in Nigeria from 174 to 190, with 44 newly developed or retrofitted companies and 16 new facilities, resulting in a 25 percent increase in local manufacturing.
The DG of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, highlighted the impact of these policies during the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) organised 'Invest in Nigeria Conference'. The '5+5 Policy' aims to phase out the importation of selected medicines and medical devices, while the Ceiling List has increased the number of restricted products from 9 to 36.
NAFDAC has also reported a 70 percent decrease in the importation of drug products in these categories, leading to a balanced ratio of imports to locally manufactured pharmaceutical products.
