Minden air quality hits unhealthy level as API rises to 142, says Penang exco

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 7 — Penang's air quality deteriorated to an unhealthy level today, with the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading reaching 142 by 3pm, according to Penang Housing and Environment Committee Chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu. The Minden monitoring station on the island first noted unhealthy readings at 9am, which continued to rise to 142.

This was the sole Penang monitoring station to record unhealthy air quality among four. Prevailing air quality had remained good to moderate between September 4 and 6, according to preliminary data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre. The centre recorded 737 hotspots in Sumatra and 540 in Kalimantan during the same period, indicating heightened fire activity in the region.

However, Somu clarified that hotspot numbers alone could not determine Penang's air quality, as factors like wind direction, speed, atmospheric conditions, and rainfall distribution play significant roles. PM₁₀ emerged as the dominant pollutant, but its concentration remained moderate. The chairman urged the public to monitor official API readings via the Department of Environment's Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) and discouraged reliance on unverified information or social media posts.

He advised against open burning activities and urged those with respiratory conditions to curtail strenuous outdoor activities if API levels rise. The public was also advised to minimize outdoor time, keep doors and windows closed, and wear appropriate face masks if air quality worsens. Sundarajoo emphasized the need for residents to avoid actions that worsen air pollution and suggested using public transport, carpooling, or more sustainable means of travel.

The Department of Environment and other relevant agencies will continue monitoring air quality and regional hotspots.
