MCE urges transport operators to stick to approve fares

Ebenezer Cobbinah, the Municipal Chief Executive of Tarkwa Nsuaem, has encouraged transport operators within the municipality to adhere to the approved fares while consultations continue. His intention, he clarified, was not to hinder the operations of transport unions, but to guarantee that the eventual decision reached was equitable, properly documented, and acceptable to all involved parties.

During a press briefing in Ahwietieso, Cobbinah addressed the recent conversations surrounding the suggested transport fare hike in the municipality. Transport operators expressed worries regarding rising operational costs, changes in fuel prices, and past fare adjustments, which they deemed justified a fare increase. Cobbinah emphasized that decisions on transport fares, involving both the public and operators, necessitated proper consultation and institutional procedures.

The assembly had advised transport unions to involve their regional and national leadership and provide supporting documents, official directives, or evidence to justify the proposed increment. Cobbinah reiterated that the assembly did not oppose any upward adjustment in transport fares if determined and agreed upon by the Ghana Road Transport-Coordinating Council (GRTCC).

He stated that the assembly had not yet officially approved the proposed adjustment in transport fares. Cobbinah engaged the relevant regional leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other stakeholders to help resolve the matter. He advised commercial vehicles that occasionally operated within Tarkwa to strictly follow the appropriate arrangements and approved fare structure for town operations.

Cobbinah emphasized that better coordination among transport unions would ensure order and fairness in the sector.
