Maresca agrees with Haaland that players started season jaded

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca acknowledged on Monday that his World Cup players have found it challenging to find form early in the season. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the club's Champions League opener at Porto, Maresca stated that it's understandable for players to start feeling tired from the outset.

Maresca's comments came in response to Erling Haaland's recent remarks on his YouTube channel. The Norwegian striker has scored three goals in three league matches but did not participate in the warm-up games due to Norway's successful run to the World Cup quarterfinals. Haaland expressed frustration about not having a pre-season, noting that he typically has one, which makes the transition to the new season more difficult.

Haaland emphasized the importance of staying mentally sharp, as the physical side will follow if he remains injury-free. However, he also acknowledged that the demanding schedule and lengthy season make it challenging to maintain an "eager feeling" to return to action. Maresca empathized with Haaland and the other players, stating that it's not easy for them to maintain their commitment to both their national team and club.

Maresca suggested that giving the players occasional rest periods—either a single game or a week away—could help them stay focused on the immediate task at hand. He highlighted the complexity of maintaining focus throughout the season, as it becomes increasingly difficult to predict the team's potential in February, March, and April. Maresca stressed that the most crucial aspect is ensuring continuous improvement game by game.
