(LEAD) N. Korea commissions nuclear-capable naval destroyer Kang Kon

Seoul, Sept. 7 (Yonhap) -- North Korea has officially launched its new naval destroyer, the Kang Kon, state media reported, as the country intensifies efforts to upgrade its naval capabilities and strengthen its combat readiness at sea with nuclear-powered vessels. During the commissioning ceremony held in Wonsan, leader Kim Jong-un hailed the 5,000-ton destroyer as an offensive weapon and an essential component of North Korea's nuclear defense system.

The KCNA stated that the new destroyer would deliver a powerful retaliatory blow against adversaries and underscore the significance of developing the nation's navy into a nuclear-armed force to bolster maritime defense and deterrence activities. Kim emphasized the importance of advancing North Korea's naval forces and deploying more formidable strategic assets.

The plan, which could potentially involve the construction of nuclear-powered submarines, was unveiled during a significant party congress in January 2021. Earlier this year, Pyongyang unveiled designs for two large warships of over 5,000 tons, including the 10,000-ton-class warships. The commissioning of the Kang Kon brings North Korea's naval assets with nuclear capabilities closer to both coasts, following the commissioning of its sister ship, the Choe Hyon, just three months prior.
