Nancy Shukri, the Women, Family and Community Development Minister, has stated that one of the factors influencing young people's decisions about marriage and having children is the lack of financial readiness. Speaking after the launch of the State-level World Population Day 2026 celebrations in Kuching, Shukri emphasized that young people are now more cautious and make plans regarding their economic capabilities before getting married and starting a family.

She pointed out that there are groups who choose not to have children due to lack of financial readiness, and they cannot be blamed for not being ready.

The government, through the SmartStart program, provides comprehensive preparations for engaged couples, including economic and financial management, as well as support for couples facing fertility issues through In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatments. The minister also highlighted that the government is attentive to marital harmony after marriage through various programs, such as the second sweet month approach for couples within five years of marriage.

She clarified that the second sweet month does not mean it is for getting married again, but rather the various activities under this program help couples reconnect and strengthen their marital relationship.

When discussing efforts to approach those in need, Shukri emphasized the government's principle of reaching out to the many who require assistance on the ground to introduce the services offered under the ministry's programs, such as the Compassion Outreach program.
