Kids sport costs families more than $4,500 a year, research finds

A report by the Australian Sports Commission has revealed that the cost of participating in community sports for children in Australia exceeds $4,500 annually. This figure, published in the "Cost of Sport" study, encompasses not only registration fees but also various hidden expenses such as parental income lost due to sporting commitments and travel costs.

For Rockhampton parents Aaron and Paula Harmsworth, the rising expenses associated with their three children's involvement in multiple sports have become a recurring worry. Despite the financial burden, the Harmsworths emphasize the invaluable lessons their children gain through sports, including respect, resilience, and social connections.

The study, conducted by researchers from Federation University and involving over 5,500 participants across Australia, found that the average annual cost for children to play in a community sport competition is $4,567. This cost is significantly higher than previously estimated figures. Adults, on the other hand, spend an average of $2,894 per year on their own sports participation.

Researchers identified expenses such as registration, equipment, uniforms, coaching, travel, accommodation, and lost income from parental commitments. For the Harmsworth family, who have seen their children represent their city, region, and state in various sports, the financial commitment has led to organized planning, including travel to different cities and states.

The study's lead researcher, Rochelle Eime, noted that previous research often overlooked the broader financial commitment of sports participation. She highlighted that the total costs, when added together, contribute to a substantial financial burden on families. Despite the high costs, the study emphasizes the importance of community sport for youth development and social connectedness.

Sporting clubs and organizations are proactively addressing these costs through equipment repurposing and voucher programs that can reduce costs for families. The Harmsworths, for instance, utilize their caravan to save on travel expenses, showcasing the resourcefulness of families navigating the financial challenges of sports participation.
