Kenya to register Burundians, EAC nationals without valid documents

Hundreds of Burundians lined up at their country's embassy in Kenya's capital Nairobi on Monday, seeking travel documents to return home. The queue was long and filled mainly with young men, their suitcases and belongings piled high. Peter Nakumujango, 62, expressed his frustration, saying he had been forced to leave as he didn't want to go home.

President William Ruto had called for a crackdown on small-scale traders from abroad and imposed the measures starting from Monday. Kenya's trade ministry confirmed that the orders applied to foreigners without the necessary work permits.

While there were no immediate signs of the crackdown in Nairobi, some Burundians outside the embassy reported receiving threats from neighbors after Ruto's announcement. There are approximately 16,000 Burundian refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya, according to the UN refugee agency. Many of them work in small-scale businesses, selling items like coffee and used clothes.

Burundi's ambassador to Kenya was unavailable for comment. Munezero Farnke, 18, one of the protesters, pleaded for more time to prepare for the journey back to Burundi or assistance in crossing the border. Some Burundians had lived in Kenya for years without identification and were planning to return next year.

Ruto's critics have accused him of using foreigners as scapegoats for the country's economic troubles ahead of the presidential election next year, where he plans to seek another term. In other news, Ruto ordered India's Tata Chemicals to halt operations in Kenya, stating that the company's presence had not benefited the nation. The company responded that it respected the government's authority and remained committed to constructive engagement.
