Kano: Taskforce uncovers new trend of substance abuse among minors

The Kano State Multi-Agency Taskforce on Drug Abuse and Trafficking has discovered a troubling new pattern of young people abusing substances in the region. In an interview with Daily Trust, the taskforce's chairman, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, disclosed that 43 minors were apprehended for various crimes including substance abuse, theft, and trafficking illicit drugs.

Additionally, two adults were sentenced to nine years in prison each for their role in recruiting minors into drug abuse and other criminal activities. The minors were apprehended across various locations such as Sabon Gari, Gadar Lado, Unguwa Uku, and Kofar Ruwa Motor Parks throughout the state.

Rimingado emphasized that the minors were not only consuming substances but were also recruited into other criminal acts like theft and illicit drug distribution. As part of their efforts, the taskforce has convicted over 200 individuals in the span of 40 days for drug-related offenses. They have conducted 100 raids across different areas where drug addicts conduct their illegal activities, leading to the arrest of numerous addicts and the seizure of a substantial amount of illicit drugs.

Preliminary findings suggest that many of these children come from neighboring states such as Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, and Adamawa, and they often take refuge in motor parks, under bridges, schools, and other public structures.

Rimingado acknowledged the need for a collective effort in combating drug abuse, urging parents and the public to contribute to protecting children from becoming victims. He assured that the Kano State Government is committed to addressing the drug abuse issue, with plans to rehabilitate and reintegrate addicts into society.
