Johor to shut schools statewide if API hits 200, as four districts already above 100

BATU PAHAT, Sept 7 — Johor plans to shut down schools, kindergartens, and childcare centers if the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading surpasses 200, as four districts have already reported API levels above 100 due to worsening haze. Dr Muhammad Naqib Md Ghazali, chairman of the State Education and Information Committee, disclosed that Segamat and Batu Pahat are at 157, Tangkak at 153, and Kluang at 151.

During a working visit to SMK Suria Jaya in Parit Yaani, Dr Muhammad Naqib informed reporters that schools are closely monitoring outdoor activities during the current hot and hazy weather. The education department has the authority to reduce these activities if necessary. Dr Muhammad Naqib emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that the state Education Department is prepared to implement school closures under existing standard operating procedures.

Additionally, district education offices and schools have been instructed to regularly update parents, students, and teachers about API readings.
