Isar Aerospace launches rocket carrying satellites, in European first

Isar Aerospace’s Spectrum rocket successfully launched from the Andøya Spaceport in Norway, marking the first European private launch to reach orbit. The achievement, part of the ‘Onward and Upward’ mission, is a significant step for Europe's goal to compete with US-based organizations in commercial space missions. Isar Aerospace, a German start-up, experienced delays due to weather, technical issues, and a rogue boat, with the first attempt resulting in a crash after only 30 seconds.

CEO and co-founder Daniel Metzler celebrated the success, stating that Europe now has sovereign access to space and entered a new chapter in European spaceflight. The rocket, designed to build scalable launch capabilities, will eventually produce up to 40 vehicles annually after the opening of a 40,000 m² production facility near Munich.

ESA's director of space transportation, Géraldine Naja, praised the team's achievement, noting it completes the first milestone of ESA's European Launcher Challenge. The launch follows Isar Aerospace's strong financial performance in Q2 2026, highlighted by new Crunchbase data showing European start-ups reported the strongest quarter in four years for venture funding.
