I tried this simple window-cleaning hack — and it was hiding in my cutlery drawer

Deep-cleaning windows is often neglected as a household chore. Vinegar may remove surface grime, but stubborn debris in window tracks remains a challenge. A clever hack discovered involves everyday items already found in a kitchen. Damp cloth and a butter knife can effectively remove stubborn dust and debris without additional cost.

Window expert Heath Showman explains that window tracks, including sliding channels and drainage slots, accumulate dust and debris. Regular cleaning prevents dirt, dead bugs, and mold buildup. The hack recommends wrapping a damp cloth over the tip of a butter knife to reach crevices while cleaning. Spray window tracks with warm soapy water first to loosen stubborn dirt. Wipe down with a damp cloth afterward to remove residue.

In a test, spraying soapy water on conservatory window tracks before using the butter knife method proved effective. The tracks were left to soak for 15 minutes before cleaning to soften sticky buildup. The butter knife easily lifted dirt and grime from all window tracks, restoring them to pristine condition. Showman advises checking window tracks every three to four months, more frequently during dry and dusty periods to maintain proper window function and prevent mold growth.
