HK 'can play wider super connector role in C Asia'

Chief Executive John Lee affirmed Hong Kong's dedication to strengthening its relationship with Central Asian nations, aiming to amplify its role as a "super connector" under the Belt and Road Initiative. During a video address at the South China Morning Post's China Conference in Astana, Lee highlighted the surge in merchandise trade between Hong Kong and Central Asia as evidence of burgeoning commercial ties.

Notably, the value of such trade soared to more than US$324 million last year, marking a 27 percent rise compared to 2020. This marked increase, Lee emphasized, underscores the deepening trade and investment ties between the two regions and Hong Kong's steadfast commitment to further enhancing this partnership. He pointed out that Hong Kong's distinctive characteristics under the 'one country, two systems' framework, including its common law system, low taxes, and diverse talent pool, render it an ideal gateway for Central Asian businesses seeking to tap into the expansive Chinese mainland market.
