Formal Umno-PAS pact more viable with Bersatu out, says analyst

An analyst believes a formal partnership between Umno and PAS is more likely to endure now that the Bersatu party is no longer involved, according to a report. Mazlan Ali, a professor from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, argues that a written agreement would provide stability compared to their previous informal understanding. Although Umno and PAS previously collaborated in the Muafakat Nasional alliance, the arrangement fell apart due to Umno's displeasure with PAS's relationship with Bersatu.

However, the political environment has shifted since then, with PAS severing ties with Bersatu in June, even though they are still partners in Perikatan Nasional. Mazlan asserts that an informal alliance in recent elections does not guarantee longevity, and a formal agreement is necessary for a sustainable political relationship.

This agreement should address seat distribution, loyalty, and common stances on political issues. The most contentious issue will likely be determining which party would lead the government if the coalition wins the next election. Both parties still have significant differences and low trust, making the idea of a unity government challenging to achieve.

Syaza Shukri, a professor from International Islamic University Malaysia, suggests that a formal charter could give the current informal cooperation more political weight and provide a framework for negotiations. However, the agreement's significance depends on its specifics. It should address exclusivity, relationships with other coalitions, and priorities in contested constituencies. While informal cooperation offers flexibility, a formal agreement provides a structured framework.
