Sydney mother challenges Liberal seat following son's hospital death

Elouise Massa, a Sydney mother, has announced her intention to run as an independent candidate for the Manly seat in the upcoming New South Wales state election. The seat, which has been held by the Liberal Party for nearly two decades, will be vacated by incumbent James Griffin, who revealed he would not contest the election. Ms Massa's decision follows the loss of her son, Joe, in 2024, which prompted her to campaign successfully for the transfer of Northern Beaches Hospital to the public system.

This campaign led to significant reforms, including the establishment of "Joe's Law," which prohibits future public-private partnerships in major hospitals. Ms Massa, a former journalist, emphasized that her experience with community advocacy has fueled her determination to effect change in NSW parliament. She plans to advocate for the environment, equality, and integrity, and vowed to campaign on issues such as healthcare, housing, and transport.

Despite the Liberal Party's expectation to maintain a presence in the northern beaches, Ms Massa is confident that her independent candidacy will better serve the community's needs.
