FIFA president Gianni Infantino to stand for re-election in 2027

Gianni Infantino intends to run for re-election as FIFA president in 2027, despite facing political turmoil and uncertainty regarding his leadership. Having served as FIFA president since 2016, the 56-year-old executive initially thought he would be unopposed in the upcoming vote at the FIFA Congress. However, opposition has emerged globally following a controversial commercial proposal.

A FIFA spokesperson confirmed that Infantino will stand for re-election, stating, "The FIFA President announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election."

The opposition stems from FIFA Forward Enterprises, a scrapped private investment initiative that aimed to invite third-party entities, including American investment firm Thrive Eternal, to acquire minority stakes in future World Cup operations. Critics accused FIFA of attempting to commercialize the sport, sparking fierce backlash from numerous national associations and regional bodies.

While European federations briefly considered a boycott, they withdrew after receiving assurances that the plan had been permanently withdrawn. Despite this, UEFA has called for structural accountability and leadership changes.

The controversy exposed regional divisions within world football. While several national federations have backed Infantino, major confederations like UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation have expressed opposition and loss of confidence. With candidate nominations closing on November 18, potential challengers are emerging.

Concacaf president Victor Montagliani and UEFA have both indicated that they may contest the election, scheduled for the 77th FIFA Congress in Rabat, Morocco on March 18, 2027. To secure the position, a simple majority vote from the 211 independent FIFA member associations is required.
