Cops probing claims Hadi was offered US backing to topple BN govt

Kuala Lumpur - Authorities are probing allegations that PAS leader Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang was offered U.S. support to overthrow the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) government in 2014. The Criminal Investigation Department of Bukit Aman has recorded 12 police complaints and obtained statements from 12 witnesses. The investigation is being conducted under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which deals with statements that could incite public fear, and under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which pertains to improper use of network facilities or services.

Convictions under both sections carry severe penalties, including imprisonment and hefty fines. The police have not yet recorded Hadi's account, but anticipate doing so soon to wrap up the inquiry. Officials urge the public to avoid speculative comments that could disrupt the investigation and to exercise caution when posting on social media to prevent interference with public order and safety.
