British family bids to row back against suicide taboo

The Ash family, consisting of mother Charlotte, daughter Camilla, and siblings Henry and James, are setting out to row 3,000 miles (4,830 kilometres) across the Atlantic Ocean to raise awareness about suicide, a subject often shrouded in taboo. This remarkable endeavor, dubbed "The World's Toughest Row," will last between 50 to 60 grueling days, starting from the Canary Islands and concluding in Antigua in December 2024.

The impetus for this challenge came in September 2023, when Charlotte's husband Robert, the father of the four, took his own life. The family is partnering with British charity Suicide & Co. to support its mission and bring suicide into more open conversations. Henry, 32, explained that their rowing journey is not about personal glory but rather raising awareness and fostering dialogue surrounding suicide.

They have already raised over £360,000 ($486,000) and plan to continue their fundraising efforts in 2027. Despite the immense challenges and the tragic past that brought them to this point, the Ash family remains steadfast in their resolve to make a difference and honor their late father's memory.
