ANC demands proof that Tshwane mayor is not corrupt

The African National Congress (ANC) has demanded that Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya provide proof regarding the upgrades made to her private residences in Pretoria East and the Eastern Cape. According to the ANC, Moya should present the receipts and invoices if she has nothing to hide. The ANC formally submitted a complaint to the Office of the Public Protector (OPP) regarding the upgrades at Moya's private properties last week.

Political analyst Rene Oosthuizen stated that unanswered allegations against a mayor, regardless of their political affiliation, cannot be dismissed. Oosthuizen argued that the real issue is whether political loyalty is being prioritized over accountability. He emphasized that the facts should speak for themselves.

According to ANC Tshwane's Kgosi Maepa, the upgrades include a swimming pool, security fence improvements, cameras, paving, painting, and other work. Maepa stated that the mayor and her political party, ActionSA, responded with a bare denial statement on August 14, labeling the allegations as false without undergoing any scrutiny by a constitutionally recognized legal review structure in South Africa.

Maepa reported that since July/August, the ANC has been releasing a series of questions through various communication channels, giving Moya an opportunity to answer and clarify. However, Moya and ActionSA have accused the ANC of making false allegations, including false accusations, women abuse, plans to destroy a "good woman," bullying, message manipulation, and disinformation.

When ActionSA accused the ANC of false accusations, Maepa responded that if ActionSA was committed to clean governance, they should provide the quotations, invoices, and proof of payments. Maepa also criticized the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane, stating that their complaint against the ANC is merely an attention-seeking tactic, lacking substance. Maepa accused the DA, including its mayoral candidate Cilliers Brink and four previous DA mayors from 2016 to 2024, of failing to manage the City of Tshwane effectively.

In response, ActionSA national chair Michael Beaumont asserted that Moya's latest move does not change anything. Beaumont argued that it is merely an attempt to revive a growing collection of allegations through innuendo and speculation without presenting any evidence of wrongdoing by Moya. Beaumont emphasized that the original allegation was that Tlopo Construction had worked at Moya's private residence.
