Alternative Fuel Vehicles Overtake Petrol Cars For First Time As CNG, Hybrid And EV Sales Rise

In August 2026, India's passenger vehicle market experienced a notable shift as alternative fuel vehicles, including CNG/LPG, hybrids, and electric vehicles, collectively surpassed petrol-powered cars for the first time. According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), alternative fuel vehicles accounted for 41.95% of passenger vehicle registrations, while petrol vehicles held a 40.85% share.

The adoption of cleaner and more cost-effective mobility options is gaining traction among Indian consumers. CNG and LPG vehicles emerged as the leading contributors, making up 25.28% of the market, followed by hybrid vehicles at 9.04% and electric vehicles at 7.63%. Diesel vehicles accounted for 17.21% of the market. Over the past year, the transition to alternative fuel vehicles has accelerated, with alternative fuels comprising 35.26% of the market in August 2025, up from 40.59% in July 2026.

The rise in alternative fuel vehicles is attributed to lower ownership costs and consumer concerns about the transition to E20 petrol. Overall, passenger vehicle sales crossed the four lakh mark, marking the first time since records began that monthly registrations surpassed this threshold in August. Rural markets experienced stronger growth, with registrations increasing by 24.99% year-on-year, while urban markets saw a slower rise of 10.93%.

Annual vehicle retail sales increased by 17.51% to 24.23 lakh units, although they declined by 6.48% compared to July 2026's record levels.
