Alleged killers of Australian surfers and American friend go on trial in Mexico

The trial of three men accused of murdering Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend, Carter Rhoad, has commenced in Mexico. The accused are Jesús Gerardo, also known as El Kekas, Irineo Francisco, and Ángel Jesús. They face charges including aggravated homicide, robbery, and grand theft auto. The trial, expected to last over four weeks, began with a change in judge due to an accident preventing the previous judge's presence.

The parents of the victims, Martin and Debra Robinson, traveled from Perth to Ensenada to attend the trial. The three alleged killers entered the courtroom wearing orange prison jumpsuits. The Robinsons emphasized the importance of being present to face the accused and witness the impact of their sons' deaths. The accused have rejected plea deals and are facing lengthy sentences, with prosecutors requesting 210-year terms for each.
