Alfonso Cuarón enters the gothic-horror realm of Dungeons & Dragons

Alfonso Cuarón, the celebrated Mexican director of "Y tu mamá también" and "Roma," is set to enter the gothic-horror world of Dungeons & Dragons for Netflix. The 64-year-old filmmaker will executive produce the live-action series, "Ravenloft," through his London-based production company, Esperanto Filmoj. Cuarón, known for his Oscar-winning work in "Gravity," "Roma," and "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," will bring his expertise in dark and atmospheric storytelling to the series.

The black-and-white drama "Roma" earned Netflix its first Academy Award best-picture nomination and marked Cuarón's return to the streaming platform. "Ravenloft," based on the tabletop game's setting of Barovia, a mist-shrouded gothic-horror realm ruled by Strahd von Zarovich, the vampire Darklord, is being written by John August, who has extensive experience in gothic fantasy, including five Tim Burton films.

No cast, production start date, or release date has been announced for "Ravenloft," with an earliest plausible release time of late 2027, though 2028 seems more likely.
